Chilly Evenings and Sparkly Lights....

Every year when I take down the tree, the corner where it stood always looks so bereft. I miss seeing the colored lights beaming out at me on these cold dark evenings - where it is dark by 5:00.... So, years ago, when I took down the tree, I put up a strand of lights around my table on the hearth. And I've kept doing it each year. It makes me feel happy to see them glowing. And then the other day when I was taking down the tree, I got this idea to try some white lights in the fireplace! Doesn't put out any heat, but it sure looks cheerful! I haven't had a fire in there for a couple of years - the flu needs cleaning, the chimney is clogged with stuff - who knows what - and I just get real nervous about having a fire anymore.... Plus our flu seems to be having some issues coming down and going back up - the last time I opened it, I thought the whole thing would crash down. So hence, the white lights! My husband has gotten used to my goofy ideas - but he thought it was cozy looking.... I think he may have just been trying to be nice - LOL! Many many years ago, he came home one winter night, and I had a "picnic" spread out on the floor for us - a big tablecloth for us to sit on - a bucket of chicken and some sides - even some wine. Hmmm, maybe it is time to do that again!

I love this idea Linda! The color lights on the table look very pretty, but I really love the lights in the fireplace! A picnic sounds like so much fun. It sounds like you enjoy life.

How sweet!! I agree--it's so dull after the holidays. My grandmother used to keep a little 1-ft tree on the kitchen counter with white lights year-around and light it at night. It's so cheery and now I've started doing the same thing!

This year I bought a 1-ft white tree w/white lights and decided I'm going to keep it out year-round and add like red hearts for Valentines Day, Green ornaments I have especially for st. pattys day, etc. :)

I think that is a great idea. I put red, yellow and orange lights that twinkle in mine a few years ago...everyone loved it...I let it lit all summer! Dianntha

You all are giving me some good ideas! I love the idea of the red, orange and yellow lights - and especially the twinkling part. I wonder how I can make mine twinkle - I know there is a bulb you stick in to do this - but where is that bulb....

And I do like the idea of keeping up a little tree and decorating it for the various holidays - especially Valentine's day. I collect heart shaped items - so this holiday is up my alley!

Neat idea with the lights in the fireplace! We felt the same way when we took down our tree--like the space was so empty. We do keep a big plant there, Plantzilla, so it's not so bad--but definitely not as cozy.

That's a great idea. Mom and I also feel like our houses look so bear after Christmas. It makes me feel depressed. I think we should take Santa and Reindeer stuff down, but leave the lights up at least through January so it doesn't seem so dark. It's a lot of work for one month anyway... :o). I love your idea about the lights and picnic!!

Very clever use of lights. Your home looks whimsical and cheerful.
Years ago I put white lights in a silk ficus tree. It looked nice year round in the living room. Got rid of the trees though--I hated dusting them!
